Police name Korangi district deputy commissioner ‘fugitive’ in interim challan of fire

KARACHI:

A local court granted bail to Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) Deputy Director Muhammad Kamran and Korangi Fire Brigade In-charge Ishtiaq Ahmed in the Mehran Town factory fire case and sought a report on the arrest of the absconding suspects.

East District and Sessions Judge heard the case of the factory fire that killed 16 workers. The judge granted bail to Kamran and Ahmed against bonds of Rs0.5 million each.

The court had earlier issued arrest warrants for Ahmed and Kamran.

During the hearing, police presented a supplementary challan of the case in which the deputy commissioner of the Korangi district was included as a fugitive on court orders.

Five more fugitives were named in the case. In the challan, Anwar Mughal, deputy director of SEPA, Rizwan Arain, officers of various departments, Salman Shahid and Khawar Hayat were declared fugitives. Efforts are on to nab the fugitives, police told the judge.

Forensic and DNA reports have not been received, police said. The number of fugitives including DC Korangi has risen to 13. The court accepted the challan and ordered the arrest of the absconding accused.
