Former SHO missing

Korai was recently suspended after being accused of various crimes

KARACHI:

A former station house officer (SHO) of the Sachal Police Station, Inspector Haroon Korai, has mysteriously gone missing. The family claimed he was taken away by plainclothesmen.

Police officials say that the incident took place at around 9.00pm on Tuesday night, but the family informed them at around 2.30pm on Wednesday. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.

Inspector Haroon Korai was recently suspended and several investigations against him were underway. Korai, an influential officer of the Sindh Police, is a resident of Saadi Town in the Sachal police jurisdiction.

His son Aamir claimed that some vehicles, accompanied by police mobile units carrying men in plainclothes, arrived and took the former SHO with them.

When present Sachal SHO Inspector Aurangzeb Khattak was contacted, he said that according to the statement of the family, Korai was taken away by plainclothesmen between 9.00pm and 9.30pm on Tuesday night from his house.

"His son, Aamir, called police helpline 15 and said his father had been taken away by unknown individuals," the SHO said.

Based on the report lodged with the police helpline, the SHO and other officers went to his house and gathered details about the incident. In response to a question, Aurangzeb Khattak said that the family did not inform the police till 2.30pm as they were waiting for their father to return.

Korai is a controversial figure in the police force and several investigations against him are under way. He was recently suspended from the post of Sachal SHO and is accused of torturing civilians in a cell. It has also been alleged that he is involved in land grabbing and several other crimes, including drug trafficking. Apart from Sachal, he has also been posted as the SHO of several other police stations including PIB Colony, Landhi and Steel Town.
