Senate panel for expediting work on CCI secretariat

Standing committee informed summary prepared for setting up of long overdue secretariat

ISLAMABAD:

The Senate Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) on Tuesday decided that the special secretariat for the Council of Common Interests (CCI) should be set up as soon as possible in order to ensure implementation of the council's decisions.

In a meeting chaired by Senator Rana Maqbool, the additional secretary and section officers of the inter-provincial ministry briefed the meeting on the details and progress made so far in relation to the establishment of the special secretariat.

The committee was informed that relevant authorities were contacted to ensure the implementation of the decisions taken by the CCI.

The meeting took into consideration implementing the decisions of September 9, 2021, so that the issues could be resolved in collaboration with the provinces.

It was informed that a summary has also been prepared for setting up the long overdue secretariat.

Senator Maqbool, the chair of the committee, while issuing directives to the IPC ministry to come up with recommendations in the next meeting, said the recommendations were crucial to initiate steps to liaise with the provinces.

The establishment of the special secretariat of the IPC, a lingering matter for years, is aimed at resolving disputed inter-provincial matters in an amicable way.

The matters among provinces, especially Punjab and Sindh, are pending due to delays in the formation of a separate secretariat of CCI. Among other issues, the water crisis and renewable energy have remained the main concerns between the provinces.
