JOHANNESBURG:
Four matches will take place on Wednesday, the twelfth day of World Cup 2010, most of which will be do-or-die situations.
All eyes are on England, which sent high expectations crashing down after a poor start to their World Cup campaign, and Germany who may create history for themselves by not qualifying from the group stage for the first time ever.
Match 1
The United States will take on Algeria today, advancing to the knockout rounds of the World Cup if they win.
Spirits are high for the Americans after two consecutive draws with Slovenia and England. US goalkeeper Tim Howard said the only concern for the team is that they perform better when they are behind and which is the only aspect of their game which needs to be changed.
However, the matchup will be an important one for both sides. Algeria is aware that if they do not perform in this match their journey will end. They will rely on their defence which managed to silence the English side.
Match 2
In the second match of the day, England will have to find the solution to their poor World Cup start against Slovenia.
The opening draw with the US and the stalemate with Algeria have left England with little room for manoeuvring.
A win against Slovenia will ensure England a place in the last 16, while a defeat will end English hopes whereas a draw will leave their fate hanging on the result of the US-Algeria game.
Unlike England, Slovenia only needs a draw to progress after a 1-0 defeat of Algeria and a 2-2 draw with the United States.
Match 3
The third match will be between Australia and Serbia.
Australia, with just one point, need to beat Serbia and hope either group leaders Ghana win by any margin or Germany hammer the Ghanaians in the simultaneous match in Johannesburg.
Australia will be playing without suspended senior players, Harry Kewell and Craig Moore. On the plus side they will be playing midfielder Tim Cahil.
However, Serbia have the quality and individually strong players to see them through to the next round. Serbia, on three points, could go through to the knockout phase with a draw.
Match 4
The third match will be played between Germany and Ghana.
A loss against Ghana would result in Germany’s failure to qualify from the World Cup's group stages for the first time in their history.
Miroslav Klose will not be playing against Ghana and five members of the squad are on a yellow card.
Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac expects to have his first-choice centrebacks back in captain John Mensah and fellow defender Isaac Vorsah.
Germany will be tense and are playing for their World Cup survival, while Ghana need just a point to make it to the Last 16 and a draw would see them through.
