Camila Cabello's 'Cinderella' seems like a feminist's dream

The decision to cast Hispanic woman is a significant break from a long tradition of white, usually blonde Cinderellas

Disney seems adamant to tweak their cult classic into somewhat a modern take. The trailer of Camila Cabello’s upcoming film Cinderella was released on Tuesday. As opposed to the story in the fairytale told about a damsel in distress, this version has a contemporary twist with the protagonist aiming to be independent and ambitious.

The film shows Camila as Cinderella, who is a talented designer and wants to start her own business of making dresses. Cabello's take on one of the most famous Disney princesses' will pave way for the upcoming remakes.

Written for the screen and directed by Kay Cannon with covers of songs written by musical artists of all time, Cinderella has an ensemble cast that includes Idina Menzel, Minnie Driver, Nicholas Galitzine, Billy Porter and Pierce Brosnan.

Cabello will try on the glass slipper when she takes on the lead role in a remake of Cinderella, a source close to the project had first revealed in 2019.

The decision to cast a Hispanic woman is a significant break from a long tradition of white and usually blonde Cinderellas. Cabello, a multi-platinum selling and Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, has also helped write the film's songs.

The project grew out of an original idea from late-night television host James Corden, the source told AFP. The remake was first reported by the entertainment magazine The Hollywood Reporter. The film will stream on Amazon Prime Video from September 3.
