Cabinet to finalise city administrator

The Sindh cabinet is scheduled to meet today (Friday) to decide on the appointment of the Karachi administrator and the rehabilitation of families affected by the demolition drives along the city's three major storm water drains, among other matters.

The spokesperson for the Pakistan Peoples Party-led provincial government and advisor to the Sindh chief minister on law, climate change and coastal development, Murtaza Wahab, is tipped as the new administrator for the city.
Wahab, if appointed, would be replacing Laeeq Ahmed, a senior bureaucrat. This would be third administrator appointed for the city after the tenure of former Karachi mayor Wasim Akhtar ended in August 2020 as Ahmed was preceded by Iftikhar Shalwani.
The provincial government has yet to hold local government elections in the province since the tenure of the last elected representatives expired nearly a year ago.
The reports of Wahab's probable appointment for the coveted position have been met with criticism and resistance by opposition parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).
