Karachi should have apolitical administrator: governor

Ismail terms provincial govt's unilateral decision on giving slot to its spokesman 'inappropriate'

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail on Friday reminded that both the provincial government and opposition parties had agreed during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan last year that the administrator of Karachi will be apolitical.

The representative of the federation in the province was reacting to the decision of the Sindh government to appoint its spokesman as the administrator of the metropolis.

The current administrator, Laeeq Ahmed, is a BPS-20 Secretariat Group officer. "In coordination and mutual consent between the government and opposition parties, a non-political administrator will be appointed for Karachi as per the decision taken during a meeting at the Governor House in the presence of Prime Minister Imran Khan," he said.

Governor Ismail was speaking to media at the residence of Grand Democratic Alliance leader Razi Khan Jatoi on Friday. Member Sindh Assembly Arif Jatoi and other leaders were also present on the occasion. Country's political situation and other matter of mutual interest also came under discussion during the meeting.

Governor said that the Sindh government's one-sided decision on appointing Karachi administrator would not be appropriate.

He said: "There is an immediate need to address issues of Sind people and today's meeting of GDA was meant to point out all problems, Sindh people are facing."

He said, a report on the issue of the appointment of administrator would soon be presented to the prime minister. He said, people look for a change and so all eyes are at the prime minister.

He pointed out that 'health cards and kisan cards' have not yet been provided to Sindh people which has become the concern of people in the province.

Later, speaking to the newsmen, Razi Khan Jatoi said, people are highly disappointed with the 13-year performance of Sindh government, leading to a situation that people are looking at the federal government.

PM's policies

Sindh governor lavishly praised the vision and leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan who successfully steering the country out of unprecedented times.

The prime minister made some unpopular but imperative decisions not only to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic but also to mitigate its economic impact, the governor said while speaking at a dinner-cum-business dialogue hosted by PTI's senior leader Samir Mir Shaikh in Karachi.

"These decisions might have sounded controversial at the time, but they turned out to be the most noteworthy action plan," he added.

He also praised Samir Mir Shaikh for being a courageous and intelligent emerging politician and businessman. "Samir Mir Shaikh has made a tremendous political mark in a very short period of time in the PTI," he said and thanked him for hosting such an august gathering.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister Mahmood Moulvi, in his address, said that Pakistan's economy over the last two years has made progress by leaps and bounds.

Speaking on the occasion, SM Muneer said the government policies have helped the economy and boosted trade. He appreciated the entrepreneur-friendly policies and vision of PTI. He praised Samir Mir for being an innovative businessman and a brave politician. "Samir Mir has the potential to achieve everything he sets out to do," he added.

Attendees at the event included a large number of PTI lawmakers, prominent businessmen and consul generals of Turkey, Qatar, UAE, Japan etc.
