When young people are seen donning coordinated clothes, you know that the wedding season is back. But when a number of women in red are seen on a stage with an equal number of men in white, feeling shy and acting awkward, you’ve just walked into a communal wedding ceremony and are looking at the brides and grooms.
Thirty five such couples were married in Tando Allahyar on Tuesday at a ceremony which was organised at the expense of Pakistan Peoples Party Tando Allahyar chapter president Syed Zia Abbas Shah to celebrate the birth anniversary of Benazir Bhutto. The ceremony was also attended by Sindh special education minister Syed Ali Nawaz Shah, along with 1,000 well wishers who came to bless the happy couples.
“It is a source of great happiness for us that we are getting married on the occasion of Benazir Bhutto’s birthday,” said Kainat, one of the brides at the ceremony.
“Mera ghar bas gaya,” said her husband, Wali Muhammad Thebo, as he too expressed his happiness at the occasion. “We are so poor that we could not have done this by ourselves.”
Each couple was given dowry worth Rs100,000 while the groom was given an additional Rs10,000 as a wedding present.
“The party, under Benazir Bhutto’s guidance, has always believed in helping the poor. Keeping this in mind, we conducted this ceremony today as a tribute to BB,” said Syed Zia Abbas Shah.
