ISLAMABAD:

In addition to the traditional markets, Pakistani mangoes are now entering the Australian and Japanese markets, announced Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood.

Inaugurating the mango festival on Friday, he said that the government was focusing on provision of all possible facilities and support to mango producers and exporters in a bid to tap new export markets for Pakistani mangoes.

“Taxes and duties on raw material for packaging and processing of mangoes will be abolished,” he announced.

He stated that a special committee had been formed for promoting mango production and exports and he was the chairman of the body.

Speaking on the occasion, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) President Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan said that Pakistan exported 125,000 tonnes of mangoes in 2020 despite the hurdles created by the Covid-19 pandemic. “Being an agricultural country, Pakistan has tremendous potential to further increase the production and export of mangoes and emerge as one of its top exporters in the world,” he said.

He recommended the government to establish Mango Expo Centre in Islamabad to showcase the country’s potential in a bid to attract the visiting foreign business delegations.

“The US and European Union are the largest mango importers of the world, therefore, the government should assist fruit exporters in tapping these markets,” he said.
