ISLAMABAD:

Prime Minister Imran Khan is likely to address the National Assembly today [Wednesday] to highlight the key features of the next year’s fiscal budget as well as his government’s targets with regard to the country’s economy.

According to sources, the premier may also touch upon the country’s foreign policy and Pakistan’s stance on the changing situation in neighboring Afghanistan.

The opposition has been demanding that the government take them into confidence particularly with regard to the Afghanistan situation where the Taliban are making rapid gains since the start of the US and Nato troops withdrawal process on May 1.

The premier is likely to take the floor once the house approves the supplementary grants.

In the past, the premier has often been drowned out by the jeers and catcalls of the opposition lawmakers during his parliamentary speeches and in order to ensure that the opposition does not resort to this behavior today, the NA speaker’s office has contacted the National Assembly opposition leader.

The government and opposition are likely to strike a deal in this regard prior to the speech.
