TORONTO:
Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, French Open winner Li Na and fifth-seed Maria Sharapova crashed out of the Roger’s Cup WTA tournament. Kvitova, Li and Sharapova all lost in straight sets to their opponents as the top seeds tumbled. Czech seventh-seed Kvitova was beaten 6-1, 6-2 by Germany’s Andrea Petkovic while sixth-seed Li went out 6-2, 6-4 to Australian Samantha Stosur. Similarly, Sharapova went down 6-3, 7-5 to Kazakh qualifier Galina Voskoboeva, ranked 135th in the world. “Whether you’re number one in the world or you’re facing someone that’s 100 or so,” she said. “You still have to go out and win. That’s what the sport is all about.”
