KARACHI:

Amid rising coronavirus cases in Sindh, the provincial government has decided to extend the closure of schools that were shut on April 26.

Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani said in a statement on Sunday that on-campus classes in all public and private educational institutions will remain suspended due to the alarming Covid-19 situation.

He said 50 per cent of school staff including teachers and headmasters can be called for managing home learning activities and online classes.

According to a notification issued by the education ministry, homework can be assigned to the students through online platforms “or in-person on a weekly basis whichever mode is feasible and safe, in order to cover syllabus with strict compliance of the guidelines..”

Earlier today, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced that restrictions were being tightened in the province in view of increasing coronavirus cases, adding that Covid-19 SOPs cannot be relaxed at the moment.

"We successfully overcame the first wave of the virus," Murad said while addressing a press conference along with medical experts and representatives of doctors' organisations.

"Covid-19 positivity ratio in Karachi is more than 13% as we deal with the third wave of coronavirus. This shows that the cases are on the rise since Eid, and we are finding it difficult to ease the restrictions in the province," the chief minister maintained.
