Farmers’ union stages protest on GT Road near Okara

Demands trade with India should be stopped

Farmers' union protests in support of their demands yesterday near Okara, Punjab where hundreds of farmers marched on tractors, blocked GT Road and pelted stones at vehicles and police party.

After their negotiations failed with the police and the administration they tried to enter the city.

The attempt was foiled by the police and a case was registered against 200 nominated farmers in the Sadar Police Station.

According to DSP Javed Jatoi, hundreds of ‘Kisan Ittehad’ members had marched on tractors in sup[1]port of their demands.

The farmers demanded that trade with India should be stopped and electricity should be provided to them at a lower tariff.

This was decided by the protesting officials on behalf of the administration that there will be peaceful protests from the bypass to Jinnah Park and they will disperse after the press conference.

However, the protesters tried to block the GT Road, created panic among the people and tried to go to Press Club Square in violating coronavirus SOPs as well.

IDPO Faisal Shehzad directed the police to take stern action against those who took the law into their own hands.

At the instigation of Police SHO Aziz Cheema, Kisan Ittihad official Mian Latif Malik Ahmed Phalrawan Chaudhry Arif filed a case against 36 nominees and 200 unknown persons under the sections of PPC including 148(Rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 149(Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of the offence commit[1]ted in prosecution of com[1]mon object), 186(Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 187(Omission to assist public servant), 341(Punishment for wrongful restraint).
