ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI:

To welcome the blossoming of flowers, the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) has launched a massive tree plantation drive at its main campus on Tuesday.

NUST Pro-Rector Planning and Resouces Maj Gen (retd) Jahangir Khan inaugurated the eco-friendly campaign by planting a citrus tree.

He was flanked by an overwhelming number of students, faculty and university officials, who together planted over 400 tree saplings of citrus, fig, loquat, pine and olive at the area earmarked for this year’s campaign.

More than 3,000 trees will be planted during the campaign, taking the overall count of trees around the campus to over 100,000.

Speaking on the occasion, the Pro-Rector lauded the NUST horticulture team for their spirited efforts over the years to transform the main campus from a barren piece of land into a lush green sight to behold.

He also encouraged the participants to enthusiastically take part in the drive and extend its scope to their homes and neighbourhoods.

‘Free saplings’

The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) will distribute free saplings between March 12 and 14, said the RCB spokesman, adding that the citizens could visit the nurseries of the board to get free saplings.

Under its spring tree plantation, the RCB drive will plant thousands of saplings in different areas of the cantonment, he said.

He added that the plantation campaign 'Plant for Pakistan' had been launched.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Cantonment Boards Rawalpindi and Chaklala President Brig Ijaz Qamar Kiani urged the citizens to come forward and play a role to make the plantation campaign a success.

He said every citizen, particularly the youngsters, should plant a sapling and ensure its care as well under adopt a plant campaign.

"Though special plantation campaigns are launched, it's not the only responsibility of the government departments, rather every citizen has a role which must be fulfilled to make the campaigns successful," he added.

"We should motivate the youth to come forward to play a more effective role in plantation campaign as youth is the future of Pakistan and their role is necessary to make it a success."
