Almost all SHOs served show cause notices for failure to check begging

Mujahid motorbike squads launched in a special campaign against professional beggars in the capital city

ISLAMABAD:

The station house officers of all but three police stations in the capital were served show cause notices by the operations senior superintendent of police (SSP) for their failure to check begging in their respective areas.

Taking notice of the rise in beggary in different areas of the city, SSP Tahir Alam Khan on Wednesday ordered the activation of Mujahid motorbike squads in a special campaign against professional beggars.

“Begging is a curse and all those supporting this menace shall be dealt with iron hand,” said the SSP as he chaired a meeting of senior police officers here. Except for the SHOs from Nilore, Shalimar and Sihala, the SHOs from 11 of the other 14 police stations in Islamabad were given show cause notices.

The SSP said that Mujahid squad personnel would be assigned duties at markets, signals and other public places, from where professional alm-seekers would be arrested.

Khan directed all senior officials to visit police pickets themselves and brief the personnel deployed there regarding security issues
and ensure high level of vigilance around Sehri and Iftari time.

He added that the accountability system in the department would be further strengthened to make officials more responsible towards their professional duties and disposal of services to the residents of the city.

“Reward and punishment helps a lot in improving the efficiency of the department, and Islamabad police have adopted it in real sense,” said the operations SSP.

The SSP directed all investigation officers to dispose of all pending cases and asked the officers to review the performance of their subordinates regarding the progress on various cases being investigated by them.
