Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday received the vote of confidence in the National Assembly and countered the opposition’s ability to challenge the legitimacy of his government. The premier received 178 votes in his favour.

Soon after the premier emerged victorious in the vote, political leaders from across the political spectrum either congratulated or criticised the premier.

Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser, in a brief post on the social media website, wrote “Congratulations @ImranKhanPTI”, adding that the premier “got 178 votes”.

While lauding the NA assembly victory, Special Assistant to CM Punjab for Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said the premier had "silenced his opponents" by getting 178 votes, more than he had gotten when he was elected in 2018.

"Congratulations PM @ImranKhanPTI. Congratulations Team @PTIofficial," wrote Provincial Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Finance Taimur Khan Jhagra.

"History will record another great move of our leader Imran khan who fought for the cause of democracy, justice and fair play. Congratulations to all Pakistan lovers for winning the vote of confidence," said PTI's Abrar Ul Haq.

Opposition reacts

While comparing the prime minister to former US President Trump, Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal said, "One commentator on President Trump's defeat commented that Trump is leaving, but the machine of lies and hatred that he has set up will be faced by American society for many years to come. The truth is - Imran is leaving, but we will endure his lies and the machine of hatred for years."

Condemning the voting results, PPP's Farhatullah Babar in a strongly worded tweet wrote, "By bringing in hired thugs and attacking the Parliament House and the opposition party PML-N, Imran Khan proved that he does not have the confidence of the National Assembly."

He added that his departure from power was delayed but sooner or later he will depart.
