Ministry gives go-ahead for setting up IT institutions in country

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has approved the provision of broadband services to the Karakoram Highway and establishment of information technology institutions in the country.

A recent meeting of the Departmental Development Working Party (DDWP), chaired by Ministry of IT and Telecommunication Secretary Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, approved funds amounting to Rs4.8 billion for seven different projects throughout the country, including the GilgitBaltistan region.

These approved projects will not only pave the way for fulfilling the prime minister's Digital Pakistan vision but will also help train over 22,000 budding professionals and create more than 5,000 job opportunities.

The meeting was informed that the Special Communication Organisation (SCO), the attached department of the Ministry of IT, would spend Rs1,580 million on the provision of internet services and mobile connectivity at the Diamer-Bhasha Dam site and in its surrounding areas.

The meeting also approved a project worth Rs298 million under which the Technical Training Centre would be established in Gilgit.

It gave approval to a project worth Rs651 million for setting up the National Testing Centre for 5G under the National Information Technology Board, while Rs1,944 million was approved for a cyber security project. APP
