In an age of digital technology, governments all over the world are striving to improve and develop their information technology (IT) base in a fast and competitive cyberworld.

IT knowledge has become imperative in the wake of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic where life literally moves online.

The greater one is tech-savvy in this world, the more opportunities it provides us to improve our lives in almost every field such as healthcare, education, civic system and employment to name just a few.

To this end, Pakistan is also racing to keep up with the pace of innovative technologies and IT hubs and parks are sprouting up in every major city.

Not to be left behind is the garrison city of Rawalpindi where the City Commissioner Capt (retd) Muhammad Mehmood has come up with a novel idea and announced on Sunday that a four-kanal freelance IT Hub is being set up behind Moti Mahal Cinema, Murree Road to promote information technology and create employment opportunities for the youth.

This IT hub will open gates to companies and individuals related to working in the IT sector to have access to a state-of-the-art facility for setting up their offices equipped with modern facilities.

He said the building has already been completed while the auction would be held by March 10.

He made these remarks while presiding over a meeting to review Freelance IT Hub and other projects. The meeting was also attended by Chief Metropolitan Officer Ali Abbas Bukhari and other officials.

Outlining the salient features of the IT Hub, he explained that the hub covered a working area of 1700 square feet, adding it also has space for four meeting halls, two group discussion halls, a daycare centre and a cafeteria.

He said that there was also space for a restaurant on the rooftop of the freelance hub while the building also has parking space for 40 vehicles. Access to the building is easy and suitable for IT companies, he commented.

Mehmood added that the company acquiring the freelance hub space on lease would provide daily, weekly and monthly rental work area to IT firms, freelancers and start-ups where 24/7 power supply and high-speed internet facility would be available.

It would provide a conducive work environment for both domestic and foreign companies.
