To regulate and ensure proper and safe parking in the garrison city, the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has awarded contracts under time-parking basis on five roads of Saddar Bazaar surprisingly at less than the expected earnings from the coverage area.
Traders and shopkeepers of Saddar said that is reportedly being said that Rs100 million would be generated from the coverage area designated for time-parking. However, the contract has been awarded for Rs12.5 million only.
Under time-parking, Rs50 for cars and Rs20 for motorcycles will be charged respectively for two-hour parking on designated roads of Saddar Bazaar. For exceeding the time limit, the charges will be Rs100 for cars and Rs40 for motorcycles respectively.
However the rights to collect this fee have been granted at a very low amount of Rs12.4 million as compared with the revenue the contractor will be generating from this area, sources said.
RCB Spokesperson Qaiser Mehmood Qamar told The Express Tribune on being contacted that he could only confirm awarding of the contract for time-parking. However, he refused to comment on awarding a contract at less rates.
The parking has been established on the roadsides instead of proper parking lots.
The marking for parking has been done on Murree Road from Haider Road to Mehfooz Road and adjoining streets, Kashmir Road from Mall Road to Murir Chowk, Kenk Road, Bank Road, and Adamjee Road.
Besides this, the contractors will also be able to charge motorists for parking in the basements of different plazas.
However, the measure can create a nuisance on the main arteries of the garrison city while it would also affect cleanliness, traffic movement besides arousing security fears.
