PASTIC organises training course for library professionals

Participants come from across country, workshop will end on March 5

ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC), a subsidiary of the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) under the umbrella of the Ministry of Science and Technology, started on Monday a specialised training course for Library Professionals titled 'Short Term and Attachment Training Courses for (LIS) Professionals' at the PASTIC National Centre, Islamabad.

The course would run until March 5, said an official. The participants of the workshop include 25 selected library professionals belonging to AJK, Balochistan, GB, K-P, Punjab and Sindh.

Quaid-e-Azam University Vice-Chancellor Prof Muhammad Ali Shah was the chief guest and Pakistan Science Foundation Chairman Professor Shahid Mahmood Baig was the guest of honour at the inaugural session.

In his address PASTIC DG, Prof Muhammad Akram Shaikh welcomed the guests to PASTIC and highlighted the role of PASTIC S&T information services since its inception to support and promote science and technology in the country.

He elaborated that PASTIC regularly organises training workshops for researchers, scientist and technologist on various ICT based research, tools/techniques at its national centre as well as all the six sub-centres at Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Muzaffarabad.

QAU VC Muhammad Ali Shah in his remarks acknowledged the significant role played by PASTIC to support research and development in the country and highlighted the need to strengthen PASTIC various databases and provision of online information services to fulfil the current needs of the scientific community.

The PSF Chairman appreciated the PASTIC role in the restructuring and revamping of national libraries for S&T development in the country.

He advised the workshop participants to get the full benefit of this opportunity and become the future leaders and play their role as experts when going back to their province.

He also offered them financial assistance from PSF if they want to organize similar activities in their region.
