Munna Bhai 3 has been the subject of fan speculation sparked by the film-makers themselves back in 2006. Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director Rajkumar Hirani teased a third film after Lage Raho Munna Bhai, the successful sequel of the beloved comedy Munna Bhai M.B.B.S (2003), came out that year. Starring Sanjay Dutt as the iconic titular character alongside Arshad Warsi’s Circuit, the Bollywood film series has a massive cult following.
However, the promised sequel never went into production. All those years later, Chopra has finally opened up about why that was so. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, the producer casually revealed that there were many chances for a Munna Bhai revival with Munna Bhai 3 but there is a small yet significant detail that had him turning down the big bucks.
"Our joy comes from creating cinema. Our joy comes from striving for excellence. Honestly, I have not made the third Munna Bhai, which will get me how many crores you can ask industry experts, because I still don't have a script I like. I must be crazy," he told the outlet.
Not long ago, Warsi had made a mention of Munna Bhai 3, saying it might not happen because well, it would've been in the works by now, especially since everyone including Dutt is on board with the idea. He might have a point, though. There is some merit to reviving the film franchise but it could go wrong in so many ways. Chopra might be wise to wait for the right script.
Meanwhile, Dutt - who was last seen in Sadak 2, which opened to less than favourable reviews – is gearing up for the release of K.G.F: Chapter 2 in July 2021.
