Kangana Ranaut to play slain Indian PM Indira Gandhi in upcoming film

Ranaut confirmed the film will not be a biopic but will be heavily inspired by the life of former PM

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut is all set for an exciting upcoming venture. The star, after her previous political drama, Thalaivi, will next be seen in a project about the slain Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. According to the reports, Ranaut revealed how excited she is about the project along with hinting that many prominent actors will share the screen with her in the film.

In a statement with The Times of India, the Queen star said that they are working on the project and the script is in the final stages. The actor added that it is not the biopic of Indira Gandhi, but rather a period film and a political drama that will help the current generation to understand the socio-political landscape of current India.

She said, “Yes, we are working on the project and the script is in the final stages. It is not the biopic of Indira Gandhi, it is a grand period film, to be precise a political drama that will help my generation to understand (the) socio-political landscape of current India. Many prominent actors will be part of this film and of course, I am looking forward to playing the most iconic leader that we have had in the history of Indian politics.”

The report added that the venture will be co-produced by Ranaut and will be based on a book, featuring the Emergency and Operation Blue Star. Speaking about the film, the actor added that a number of prominent celebrities will be a part of the venture and she is looking forward to playing the most iconic leader that there was in the history of Indian politics.

The actor even shared a throwback image from one of her old photoshoots where she had dressed up as Indira Gandhi on Twitter and wrote, "This is a photoshoot about iconic women I did at the beginning of my career, little did I know one day I will get to play the iconic leader on screen."

The story and screenplay are being written by Sai Kabir, who will also direct the film.
