Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) staged sit-ins at more than 50 spots in Karachi on Saturday, demanding the annulment of the Sindh Local Government Act and holding of local bodies elections.

Voicing these demands, JI Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also urged the government to ensure that "billions of rupees that entities like K-Electric (KE) owed government institutions and consumers" were returned.

Moreover, he called for the government to direct the Sui Southern Gas Company to take concrete measures for ensuring uninterrupted supply of gas to industrial and domestic consumers.

The JI leader said the government needed to introduce at least 1,000 buses in Karachi on an immediate basis, so as to resolve issues faced by commuters in the metropolis. He also demanded a concrete plan for waste collection and solid waste management, streamlining of the city's sewerage system, provision of water without interruption and the availability of better health, educations and sports facilities in the metropolis.

Besides, the JI has demanded a new census for Karachi, abolishment of quota system for government jobs, an autonomous city government that can take control of KE and a forensic audit of the power utility.
