PRCS to launch road safety card
The Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has launched an initiative to raise public awareness about road safety to reduce traffic accidents, deaths, and injuries and save lives.
The project will promote the ‘Individual Road Safety Commitment Card’ that is one of the initiatives set by the Global Road Safety Partnership.
Under the project, special emphasis on the post-crash response will be laid. First aid training will be imparted to traffic police and motorways police in order to boost their capacity vis-à-vis post-crash response so that maximum lives can be saved and permanent disabilities averted. The project will involve volunteers who will help promote the 10-point agenda of the Individual Road Safety Commitment Card.
Two killed, 7 injured in road accidents
In this regard, PRCS Chairman Abrarul Haq said that road safety was a major issue in Pakistan. It is estimated that every five minutes, a person is killed or seriously injured in a traffic accident in the country. He said that lack of awareness was one of the major causes of road deaths and injuries in Pakistan.
Haq expressed that the number of deaths and injuries could be reduced by improving the level of awareness among the people and transporters.
PRCS Chairman said that road safety was a shared responsibility and all people need to take effective measures to save our people from deaths and injuries on the roads.
He added that the project also aimed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The current number of road deaths in Pakistan would be brought to half which is the reflection of the National Road Safety Strategy 2018: 2030.
Another purpose of PRCS’s initiative is to strengthen awareness of existing laws to help the government promote road safety.
