Punjab plans to hold LG polls in September, ECP told

Election commission gives K-P govt 15 days to give a date for the purpose

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will take a decision on the date of the local government polls in Punjab next week after the latter informed the former that it plans to proceed on the matter in September this year.

The country’s top electoral body also sought a date from the K-P government on the purpose in the next 15 days.

The ECP, which met under the chairmanship of chief election commissioner (CEC), deliberated on the holding of LG polls in Punjab and K-P and reviewed the preparations in this regard.

The Punjab government informed the ECP that it planned to hold the LG polls in the province in September this year. The commission maintained that it would decide the matter next week.

Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat informed the electoral body that they would present important details regarding the village/panchayat/neighbourhood elections in the next 15 days.

The ECP stressed on providing the required information within the given timeframe so that the date for LG polls could be decided.

Meanwhile, K-P local government secretary observed that they had received a notification regarding the limits of Peshawar tehsil from the board of revenue.

He said soon a notification regarding the numbers of village/neighbourhood council would be issued.

The meeting was told that Conduct of Election Rules 2020 had been sent to the provincial cabinet and it was hoped that they would be formally approved by it in the next meeting.

The ECP asked the K-P government to give a date for the holding of LG polls in the province in the next 15 days.

The meeting was attended by Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat, ECP secretary and its members and officials from the Punjab and K-P governments.
