Mobile games thrived this year as people turned to them for entertainment and connection during the pandemic. As demand and interest increased worldwide, five mobile games accumulated more than $1 billion in 2020, reports Sensor Tower.

Despite having a fair share of controversies last year, PUBG, a popular online multiplayer battle game ranked at the top, generating $2.6 billion which is a 64.3 per cent increase in revenue since 2019.

PUBG was among 118 Chinese-origin mobile applications banned by New Delhi earlier this year; the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) also lifted a ban on the online game after meeting with representatives of the company.
Another Tencent game, Honor of Kings made it to the top list, generating a close to $2.5 billion in player spending, up 42.8 per cent from last year.

Further, Pokémon GO from Niantic came in third with $1.2 billion revenue, Coin Master from Moon Active ranked at fourth place, followed by Roblox.
Over the years, smartphone gameplay has become increasingly popular as it allows a few moments of play at a time, often while sipping coffee or waiting for transit, in contrast to console games with immersive worlds that can span hours.
