A subcommittee of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Law and Justice has asked the relevant official to inform the lawmakers about the reasons for the non-implementation of the Police Order 2002 in the federal capital.

The subcommittee met here on Tuesday with its Convener Malik Ehsanullah Tiwana in the chair. The committee directed the focal persons of the law and justice ministry and the interior ministry to brief it about the police reforms in the next meeting.

The meeting, attended by officials from the law and justice ministry and the interior ministry, reviewed progress in reforms in police and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The implementation of the Police Order 2002 also came under discussion.

The committee convener asked whether that the Police Order was implemented in Islamabad. He remarked that if the Police Order was not adopted in the federal capital, the province would not agree to it.

“What has the ministry interior done with regards to police reforms?” he asked the officials. He also posed a question as to which would be the lead ministry – interior of law – for the reforms process. He directed the officials to informed the committee members in this regard in the next meeting.

Referring to the former law minister Zahid Hamid, the convener said that Hamid had also done some work on the CrPC. He directed the officials to inform the committee about work done during previous governments.
