Consider including women in voters’ list: SC
The Supreme Court (SC) directed on Thursday the relevant persons to consider including names of female voters in the voter list for Hindu panchayat elections in Larkana.
The SC was hearing a plea challenging the restriction on women from casting votes in Hindu panchayat elections.
The petitioner, Kalpana Devi, maintained that she had approached the court against gender discrimination.
“As a woman, I have the right to vote,” she said.
Election commissioner Lucky Chand also appeared before the court.
The court directed the relevant persons to consider including the names of women in the voters' list and instructed the Larkana Hindu panchayat Larkana president provide assistance in that regard.
Murder case
Separately, the SC referred a murder case to the Sindh High Court (SHC) for rehearing.
It was hearing a plea challenging the high court’s verdict in the case.
The petitioner, the brother of the murdered person, Ghafoor, maintained that the SHC had given its verdict without listening to him, and therefore, he had challenged the verdict in the apex court.
Ghafoor was murdered in Padidan in 2010.
