A policeman was gunned down by unidentified men on a motorcycle in front of his wife in Haji Shah Sharif area of Kasur in Punjab on late Saturday night.
The deceased, identified as Muhammad Saleem, father of three, used to perform patrol duty on the Khara Road.
According to police officials, Mohammad Saleem was on his way home from the DHQ hospital with his wife when the couple was signalled to stop by unidentified men on a motorcylce. The assailants made his wife step onto the sidewalk and opened fire at Saleem before fleeing the scene.
As soon as the incident was reported, police rushed to the crime scene and moved the police officer's body to the district hospital for postmortem.
However, things to an even sour turn when the distressed heirs of the slain policeman resorted to aerial firing inside the emergency room of the district hospital. This spread panic among the hospital administration and other patients.
Assistant Medical Superintendent of DHQ hospital Dr Fayyaz said the heirs of the deceased opened fire and harassed doctors and paramedics. A case will be registered against them, he added.
In a similar incident in August, a cop was shot dead by unidentified armed men on a motorcycle near Karimabad flyover in Karachi.
The 45-year-old constable Muhammad Ali, was on his way to the Azizabad traffic police checkpost, where he was deployed, when the incident took place. As a result, Ali sustained two bullet wounds in the chest.
He was rushed to a nearby private hospital in a rickshaw but succumbed to his injuries. Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors confirmed his death. The body was then shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
