RAWALPINDI:

At least 25 people are reported to have been injured on Sunday in a blast near Rawalpindi's Ganj Mandi Police Station.

According to rescue 1122 officials, 22 people were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital, whereas three were treated on the spot. Their condition was stated to be critical.

CPO Rawalpindi Ahsan Younus said that this was the second blast in the city within a period of 10 days.

He added that the nature of the blast was still being ascertained. "It would be too early to say what kind of a blast it was as investigations are still underway," he said.

Younus said the previous blast had also happened near a police station - the Pir Wadhai police station - but in both the cases it was innocent bystanders who bore the burnt of it.

At least one person was killed and eight others were injured after an explosion in a rickshaw in the Pir Wadhai area of Rawalpindi on December 4.

Local police officials said the blast occurred in front of a grocery story and officials were investigating the cause. Police officials said terrorism could not be ruled out as a cause till the investigation concluded.

In one of the worst explosions reported in the country this year, at least eight people were killed and over 125 injured after an explosive device in a bag detonated inside a madrassa in Peshawar's Dir Colony on October 27.

Police sources revealed that around 40-50 children were present inside the madrassa when the bomb went off.

The seminary's administration said around 1,100 students study at the institution and added that students between the ages of 22 and 28 were present in the class at the time of the explosion.

SP City Peshawar Waqar Azeem told The Express Tribune that an unidentified man entered the madrassa around 8am and left a suspicious school bag in the premises.

He said the bag is believed to have had an IED device that went off when the children started filling in the seminary.
