23 more Covid-19 deaths in Sindh

Fatalities include three more doctors in Karachi as nearly 1,500 fresh infections emerge

As many as 23 people succumbed to coronavirus overnight, said Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Friday, adding that the death toll in the province had soared to 3,132.

The CM added that 1,489 new infections were detected from the 11,537 samples tested on the day in Sindh, constituting a positivity rate of 12.9 per cent. With the newly reported cases, the virus tally in the province has reached 192,735.

He further stated that there were 24,137 active coronavirus cases in the province, with the condition of 777 patients being critical and 94 of them being placed on ventilators.

On the other hand, 862 more patients recovered from the virus overnight, taking the number of recoveries to 165,466.

According to Shah, of the newly reported cases, 1,067 were detected in Karachi alone. Meanwhile, Hyderabad saw 45 cases, Badin and Shaheed Benazirabad 22 each, Mirpurkhas 17, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar and Thatta 15 each, Ghotki, Khairpur, Larkana, Matiari and Tando Muhammad Khan 14 each, Jacobabad 13, Sujawal 12, Qambar-Shahdadkot eight, Shikarpur and Sukkur five apiece, Umerkot three, and Kashmore and Naushero Feroze two each.

Three doctors succumb to virus

Meanwhile, three more doctors lost their lives due to Covid-19 in Karachi, including former Sindh health director general Dr Abdul Sattar, retired Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre doctor Dr Tahir Amin, and private practitioner Dr Waseemuddin.

As many as 103 healthcare workers have succumbed to the contagious disease in Pakistan so far. As per official records, 2,221 doctors have been infected by the coronavirus in Sindh to date, along with 407 nurses and 519 other health workers.
