Drug seizure in Multan surpasses other areas

Lahore tops list of charas haul during current year

Multan region has reported the highest quantity of drug seizures in Punjab during the ongoing year.

According to official data, Multan topped the list of divisions with respect to seizure of opium, heroine, moonshine and liquor, while Lahore was ahead in Charas abuse.

The data showed that 203.41kg of heroine was seized between January 1 and September 30 this year in Multan region. Gujranwala was second with seizure of 152.51kg of heroine, followed by Faisalabad 127.23kg, Lahore 84.1kg, Sheikhupura 41.09kg, Rawalpindi 85.5kg, Sargodha 9.49kg, , Sahiwal 79.155kg, Dera Ghazi Khan 45.57kg and Bahawalpur 17.79kg.

The highest quantity of liquor seized was 129,377 litres in Bahawalpur, while 123,976 litres was seized in Multan region. At least 68,387 litres of liquor was seized in Lahore region, 29,333 litres in Sheikhupura, 33,912 litres in Gujranwala, 25,323 litres in Rawalpindi, 49,213 litres in Sargodha, 104,219 litres in Faisalabad, 52,598 litres in Sahiwal and 35,985 litres in DG Khan.

A police officer told The Express Tribune that liquor was brewed through raw means in the peripheral and rural areas of Multan, while the trend in central Punjab was declining. He said lack of employment in industries left the youth dependent on agriculture and cattle herding with free time.
