3 starlets who rocked puffy sleeves
From carrying a miniature Jacquemus bag to wearing Balenciaga sock-boots, there isn’t anything that we have not wanted to purchase and vaunt. In the time of social media, it is crucial to follow what is on trend in order to stay relevant.
Most famous fashion trends of 2020 includes chunky boots, feminine dresses, matching sets, bucket style bags, faux leather trench coats and gold chain necklaces. But the most popular and universal trend has been oversized Victorian sleeves, taking Pakistani fashion trend by a storm. Famous icons such as Iqra Aziz Hussain, Maya Ali, Mawra Hocane, Sonya Hussyn and Zhalay Sarhadi have all been spotted flaunting oversized sleeves in a range of desi and non-desi wear, including matching sets and bridals too.
These Victorian sleeves are a classic from the 1980s. The style line varies from designer to designer and how puffy a sleeve one desires to wear. These sleeves range from bishop sleeves, cuff sleeves, lantern sleeves, gigot sleeves, balloon sleeves and bell sleeves, etc. Here’s how our favourite starlets have been rocking the look.
· Maya Ali
Seen in a plum pishwas, the Parey Hut Love star flaunted her gigot sleeves with intricate handwork and embellishments, adding the extra glamour to this flowy raw-silk piece by Faiza Saqlain. The dress was paired up with churidar pants and a dupatta. Swirling at her happiest, Maya carried the outfit with soft evening makeup, sleek parted hairstyle, medium-sized jhumkas and golden ankle-strap heels, setting the standard for formal wear.
· Mawra Hocane
Of late, many bridals by Elan have emphasised on embellished puff sleeves and blouses, as seen here on Mawra Hocane. From the chikankari to the net, the outfit contains both western and eastern elements. The lehenga is enhanced with mirror work, chikankari and pearls whereas the blouse is covered with embroidery and sequins in a western cut. The outfit comes with a light net dupatta that also has similar net and mirror detailing.
Mawra completed the look with pearl jewelry and soft makeup to bring out the pastel tones of the dress.
· Zhalay Sarhadi
This model-cum-actor carried pleated gigot sleeves in a matching casual set by Sobia M in the midst of fall season. Zhalay complimented the plain purple hue with soft makeup and curled hair, looking ever so stunning.
Current western trends focus on vintage makeup, hair and accessories. Perhaps that’s where our local designers are getting the inspiration for puffy sleeves from? With public figures such as the Kardashians, Ariana Grande, Bella Hadid and the Jenner sisters sporting the look, who is to say it isn’t here to stay?
