ISLAMABAD:

A huddle, presided over by Planning Minister Asad Umar, on Thursday stressed the need for expediting the work on Greater Karachi Water Supply Project (K-IV) because of the severe water shortage in the megacity.

The meeting was held to discuss progress on the K-IV project. Water Resources Minister Faisal Vawda, MNA Najeeb Haroon, Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) chairman, Sindh government’ Planning and Development Board chief and senior officials attended the meeting.

The WAPDA chairman gave a detailed presentation on the project, including its physical and financial progress, issues and decisions required for the implementation of the project under new arrangements.

It was decided that a summary of the change of execution agency would be sent to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council so that the authority could formally take over the project. Wapda was also given the go-ahead to hire a consultant as soon as possible to review the technical issues and give the go-ahead for the final decision on which the revised PC-I will be made.

The Sindh government assured that the remaining land acquisitions would be completed as soon as possible.

The meeting emphasised that there is a severe water shortage in Karachi and therefore the project needed to be carried out on a fast track basis and all the agencies involved are committed to prioritising the project.
