Economic progress will come soon’

NA deputy speaker emphasises revival of economy govt's top priority

ISLAMABAD:

The government is striving for economic betterment of the country and economic progress will be witnessed very soon, said National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri.

Talking to a delegation of the All Pakistan Business Forum (APBF) on Friday, Suri emphasised that revival of economy was the top priority of the government. Business community had an important role to play and the government was taking steps to ensure a business and investment-friendly environment, he said.

"Pakistan has faced numerous challenges over the past few years due to which the business community has suffered immensely," the deputy speaker said.

He suggested that business teams should participate in meetings of parliamentary standing committees on trade, finance and economy. He assured businessmen that the government would listen to their concerns and work hand in hand with them to further enhance business activities in the country.

"The government has ensured the continuation of business activities during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is a sign of its commitment to assisting the business community," he said.

"Support and contribution of the business community in the fight against coronavirus has enabled the government to control the disease."

The APBF delegation gave a few recommendations and suggestions for improving the economic structure and business environment in the country.

APBF President Syed Maaz Mahmood said the forum was planning to organise a conference to promote the soft image of Pakistan at the national and international levels.

He appreciated the government for utilising all possible resources to revive the economy and businesses during challenging times.

"Government has taken various steps to mitigate the impact of coronavirus on economic growth," he remarked.

Since the onset of pandemic-related economic pressure, the central bank had reduced its policy rate, allowed one-year extension in principal loan repayment along with rescheduling and restructuring of loans without affecting the credit history of borrowers, Mahmood pointed out.

He noted that the demand for country's products had narrowed down internationally owing to Covid-19 but anticipated a pickup over the next few months.
