ECP mulls polls to elect new mayor

ECP officials says elections will be organised within two months

ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is mulling whether or not to hold by-elections on the seat vacated by the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) mayor.

The seat occupied by Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz fell vacant after he resigned from it on October 4 after a long-drawn battle with the federal government over lack of resources and powers.

ECP officials said that elections will be organised within two months and that a schedule will be issued as soon as consultations are complete. Meanwhile, sources have informed The Express Tribune that ECP declared the seat as empty from November 18 after the interior ministry issued a notification confirming Azizs’ resignation.
