Customs officials claimed on Saturday to have foiled smuggling bids and confiscated items worth Rs50 million in separate operations at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Customs deputy collector Inam Wazir said that a team of Customs officials, acting in line with directives against smuggling through airlines, had tightened the process of examining parcels being sent out of the country after receiving a tip-off. As a result, he narrated, the team led by additional collector Farah Farooq foiled an attempt to smuggle seven rare coins to Sharjah.

According to him, the Sindh Archaeology and Antiquities Department, after inspecting the coins, verified them as valuable artefacts.

In another parcel, the officials intercepted 300 psychotropic tranquiliser pills being sent to Hong Kong via air. Moreover, 10,000 memory cards, expensive mobile phones, gems and artificial jewellery were also confiscated.
