Court exonerates citizen in heroin case
The Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench has overturned death sentence awarded to a convict in an alleged smuggling case.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Shahid Abbasi and Justice Sadiq Mehmood Khurram exonerated Rehman Uddin in a case of smuggling 24 kilogrammes of heroin.
Rehman was sentenced to death and awarded Rs500,000 penalty in an alleged case of heroin smuggling.
However, the court observed that the trial court had handed down the sentence on the grounds of fake witnesses and faulty investigation.
The counsel for defence, Advocate Abdul Samad Khan Khattak, maintained that police had raided the house of the petitioner late in the night, dragged him out of the bed and hauled him to police station on pretext of being a drug smuggler.
