‘Changes in electoral system inevitable’

Minister terms electronic voting a revolutionary step

LAHORE:

Senior Punjab Minister Abdul Aleem Khan has said electoral reforms were currently the most important requirement and the recommendations put forward by Prime Minister Imran Khan in this regard were important and commendable.

He said electronic voting would be a step in the right direction and would make the election results acceptable to all. Talking about electoral reforms, the senior minister said granting the right to vote to overseas Pakistanis has been a part of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) manifesto. He added that it was a crucial promise that, if fulfilled, would further strengthen the democratic process in the country.

“There was no doubt that changes in the present electoral system were inevitable for which a necessary enactment in the Constitution is required,” Aleem said.

He commended that for the first time in the history of the country, Prime Minister Imran Khan has given revolutionary proposals and he wants immediate implementation on these recommendations in Senate elections.

Senior Minister Abdul Aleem Khan voiced hope that the opposition would support the government on electoral reforms and offer its support for necessary legislation. “The time has come for us to get matured in our attitudes toward the democratic procedures as electoral reforms will improve the image of Pakistan in the world.” Aleem said the PM has fulfilled his promise to change the current unreliable system and regarding electoral reforms this effort would bring fruitful change in the country.
