Sanam Saeed's 'Ab Buss' is inspired by motorway rape incident
The September motorway rape incident in the country will be remembered as one of the most horrific tragedies in years to come. The incident itself - along with the victim-blaming narrative being perpetrated by some - included a senior official, who was heading the investigation, serves as a brutal reminder regarding the state of disparity women in Pakistan have to face every day.
A new short film titled Ab Buss, starring Sanam Saeed in the lead role has managed to encapsulate the ensuing narrative around the incident to some extent. Being aired on Pakistani web-series platform, See Prime, the short revolves around an average suburban woman who is taking extreme measures as she prepares herself for a trip.
Saeed’s character Maya, within the first few moments, receives a phone call following which she is seen arming herself with a taser and a gun, all the while adopting military-esque attire. To some, it may seem that this is a classic revenge story, with the Cake star just being informed of the whereabouts of someone who may have wronged her once.
However, this could not be further from the truth. It turns out that Maya is taking precautionary measures instead. When her husband suddenly walks in on Maya, it is revealed that her father suffered a heart attack and she has to travel all the way along with her young daughter.
