Man killed over free-will marriage

Suspect’s sister married the victim in court four years ago

A young man was allegedly shot dead by his brother-in-law on Monday for contracting a free-will marriage.

As per the details, Tanveer alias Tawli, a resident of Street no 14 Mansoorabad, had contracted a marriage with Maria Bibi, daughter of Mohammad Anwar, a resident of Chak No 204RB, in court around four years ago.

The brother of Maria, identified as Rehman alias Babu was upset with his sister’s decision and it developed into a family dispute.

On the day of the incident, the accused Rehman, in a fit of rage, went to Naghbanpura area where the victim Tanveer was present. Rehman along with his accomplice shot Tanveer in the chest and abdomen outside an electrician’s shop. The victim sustained critical bullet injuries.

He was shifted to Allied Hospital Faisalabad where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sargodha Road police reached the spot on receiving information and handed over the body of the deceased to his heirs after postmortem.

On the statement of Munir Ahmed, a case was registered against three accused including the accused Rehman and his father Muhammad Anwar under Section 302. Police also started raids to arrest them.

This is not the only incident in which a person was killed for contracting a free-will marriage.

On June 9, a man axed to death his sister for contracting love marriage.

The deceased woman was living in Lahore and she had come to visit her parents. The accused was arrested an hour later and police seized the murder weapon as well.

Reportedly, Saima Bibi, a resident of Baman Zirin village of Ravi got married to a young man named Azam on which her brother Shafqat got upset.

He was unhappy with his sister's marriage.

The deceased had been living in Lahore with her husband Azam.

During this time she gave birth to two children.

On the day of the incident, Saima Bibi had come to the village from Lahore to visit her parents where her brother Shafqat took the opportunity to kill her with an axe and then fled away. After receiving the information about the incident, the police reached the spot and took the body into their custody.

On August 19 last year, a young couple was murdered shot dead for contracting a free-will marriage in Samanabad, Lahore.

Kainat, 18, and Asad had contracted marriage against the wish of their parents and they were living in a rented house in Rasool Park.

The suspect, identified as Sher Gull, a resident of Old Mozang, was said to be the brother of Kainat.

Asad’s maternal uncle had called Sher Gull at the couple’s house for reconciliation. Sher Gull visited their house with a pistol. After exchange of harsh words, Sher Gull first shot at Kainat and then Asad who stepped in to rescue his wife.

The suspect escaped after committing the crime, leaving them dead.
