Sugar price likely to come down by ‘Rs15 to Rs20 per kg’

Over 100 tonnes of imported sugar has arrived at Karachi port, says Hammad Azhar

Minister for Industries and Production Hammad Azhar has said that the federal government imported more than 100 tonnes of sugar, which would reduce prices of the commodity by Rs15 to Rs20 per kilogramme, according to Radio Pakistan.

He was addressing a joint news conference with Minister for National Food Security Syed Fakhar Imam and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz in Islamabad on Friday.

Azhar said the imported sugar has arrived at Karachi port out of which 40,000 tonnes have been released to the Punjab government to provide the sweetener at controlled rates.

He said that the sugar mills have also assured to start the crushing season early as decided with the Punjab government, which will too help reduce prices of sugar in the domestic market.

Talking about wheat shortage, Syed Fakhar Imam said 1.8 million tonnes of the food staple in total will be imported by January next year. He said the private sector has imported 2,20,000 tonnes of wheat so for.

Replying to a question, Shibli Faraz said the government does not have any intention to privatise Pakistan Television.

He said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan was making efforts to changing Pakistan on the model of Riyasat-e-Madinah despite all hurdles and difficulties.

“We have decided our destination and with the grace of Allah, the ultimate aim of the prime minister is to change Pakistan on the model of Riyasat-e-Madinah and traditions of Islamic history and caliphs.”

To another question, he said the government is dismayed at the incidents of violence in the country.
