SHC refers cop corruption pleas to CJ
The Sindh High Court referred on Thursday petitions filed by the accused in a reference pertaining to corruption in the Sindh Police Fund to the high court's chief justice on Thursday.
A two-member bench headed by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro was hearing the bail pleas of former Sindh IGP Ghulam Haider Jamali and others, but the lawyers of the accused maintained that according to the directives of the apex court, the bench that heard the first case should hear the petitions filed by other accused.
According to the lawyers, the petitions of co-accused Fida Hussain Shah and Tanveer Ahmed Tahir were heard by the SHC chief justice himself. The counsels argued that as there was the same reference against them, the petitions of other accused, including the former IGP, should also be heard by the same bench.
The bench referred the case to the CJ and extended the bail of Jamali and others till November 6.
Containers as blockades
Another two-member bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, summoned the additional home secretary in a case pertaining to containers being picked up to block roads.
The petitioner's counsel argued that the police picked up containers without permission to block roads, which then had to be retrieved by the companies. The containers are 25 per cent damaged during this use, argued the counsel, praying the court to restrain police from picking up containers from warehouses.
The home department will have to formulate guidelines for picking up containers and the police will have to follow the home department's directives, remarked Justice Mazhar. At least leave the containers back from where they were taken, he added, directing his remarks towards the police.
The court summoned the home department's additional secretary and sought a detailed reply by November 24.
