PESHAWAR:

The Tuesday morning explosion in a seminary that killed at least seven students echoed in the provincial assembly session as lawmakers demanded that the government tackle the new wave of terrorism rising in the country.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly session resumed on Tuesday with Speaker Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani in the chair.

At the outset, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) Parliamentary Leader Maulana Latifur Rehman raised a point of order and spoke about the bomb attack. Condemning the incident, he said that the provincial capital has witnessed a bomb blast after a long time.

Political activities have resumed in the country as the opposition parties, gathered under the banner of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), plan to organise a large public rally in Peshawar next month.

He demanded that the government take strict security measures to avoid such incidents in the future.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Parliamentary Leader Inayatullah Khan said that thousands of people have lost their lives in bomb blasts and other incidents of terrorism. Tuesday’s blast, he said, was a matter of great concern and urged the security institutions to sit together to tackle this new wave of militancy.

Awami National Party (ANP) lawmaker Khushdil Khan said that madrassa students have been targeted in the terrorist attack. He said that the incident suggests terrorists have regrouped and it appears as if the era of militancy is resurging, adding that even madrassas and mosques are not safe.

The ANP leader further said what message was being conveyed as a bomb blast occurred right before the PDM was due to hold a rally in Quetta and now another bomb blast has hit Peshawar ahead of the PDM’s rally in the city.
