ISLAMABAD:

To enhance its garbage collection capacity, the apex civic authority of the federal capital has decided to acquire 100 large garbage containers and 500 garbage trolleys. For this purpose, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) said that it has floated tenders.

The authority said that since the sanitation department had been repatriated from the elected Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) ten days ago, around 6,300 tonnes of solid waste had been lifted from the city.

The average rate of garbage collection from Islamabad was 650 tonnes per day, which the authority claimed was less than 500 tonnes when the directorate operated under the IMC. To enhance garbage collection, the authority said that as many as 1,600 sanitation workers have been deployed under a special cleanliness drive in the city.

They are being supported by 40 dumpers, four excavators, eight buckets and other heavy machinery. Moreover, the duties of sanitary workers have been extended from 7am to 3pm up to 5pm. Further, the sanitary staff in markets has started to work in double shifts until 11 pm.
