ISLAMABAD:

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said the easy way to rule the country is to give an ‘NRO’ – a secret reprieve – to the ‘corrupt’ opposition leaders but this easy way also leads to destruction.

“Our lives will also become easy [if we offer the opposition a chance to be exonerated of corruption charges]. We will deliver speeches in parliament and complete our term.

“But, this will be the path to destruction,” Imran said on Friday while inaugurating a cardiac stents making facility at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad

The opposition parties have upped the ante against the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan in and outside parliament and held their first power show in Gujranwala on Friday under their newly cobbled Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), demanding the premier’s resignation.

Obliquely referring to the opposition’s alliance that includes all the major opposition parties including the PML-N, the PPP and the JUI-F, Imran said: “You wake up in the morning and you find all the dacoits ganged up against you, compelling you to go for the easy way and compromise.

“We are encouraged to take the easy way and the easy way [in the current political scenario] is to forgive the opposition leaders and give an NRO”. However, he said, the way to betterment is never easy. “We will have to make difficult decisions and difficult decisions will take us forward.”

The premier said nations set their priorities but unfortunately “our vision” has not been as clear lately

"The most important thing for someone is to have a vision for the future. The bigger one's vision is the more struggles one has to go through.

“The cycle of life is never linear; there are always ups and downs. You have to make very hard decisions in life and those decisions determine whether you get success or not."

Speaking directly to the students in attendance, the prime minister also said true happiness comes when one realizes their potential rather than materialistic means.

Separately, the premier while addressing a parliamentary party meeting said the opposition is protesting because it is out of job and there is no need to pay much attention to its protests.

“The opposition is getting exposed with each passing day. There is no need to be worried by the opposition’s rallies. Nobody has ever been able to hold as big rallies as the PTI has organized in the past,” Imran Khan was quoted as saying.

At the NUST function, the prime minister lauded the efforts of the NUST team for leading the country not only in engineering sciences but also in innovations in the field of medical health sciences.

Appreciating the initiative to manufacture cardiac stents in Pakistan, he said the step will significantly reduce expenditures on treatment of heart diseases besides saving foreign exchange.

He said the government will promote a knowledge-based economy. “The government is focused on promoting local manufacturing and industrialization to enhance exports,” he said.

The prime minister said real development of the country is not possible without enhancing exports, and the PTI government has set the right direction to focus on exports instead of imports.

In addition, PM Imran said, such initiatives are also helping to create an enabling environment for overseas Pakistanis – who are the biggest asset of the country – to invest in the country. He also said that all government departments have been directed to facilitate such initiatives,

Imran said when PTI came to power Pakistan was facing a $40 billion trade gap, adding that the current account deficit ultimately leads to high inflation mainly due to depreciation of the currency.

The N-Ovative Health Technology Facility has been set up at NUST to manufacture cardiac stents locally.

The initiative will bring down the cost of treatment for various cardiac ailments and make the country self-sufficient in the production of stents. Pakistan will now become one of the 18 countries in the world and the second Muslim nation – after Turkey – producing cardiac stents locally.
