Dr Shaista Sohail posted as HEC’s new ED

She brings with her a diverse experience of serving at national and international levels

Civil servant Dr Shaista Sohail has joined the Higher Education Commission (HEC) as its executive director.

This was announced by the commission on Thursday.

Dr Sohail, the commission said she was a basic pay scale (BPS) grade 22 officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS). She holds a doctorate in International Relations from the Geneva School of Diplomacy in Switzerland apart from a Master’s in Economics from the Punjab University.

She brings with her a diverse experience of serving at national and international levels.

On the academic side, Dr Sohail started her career as a lecturer in economics at the Government College for Women in Okara before she joined the civil service in 1985.

She then went on to serve as the Assistant Commissioner of Karachi South.

Her key postings include being the joint secretary of policy and planning at the Ministry of Industries, Member Estate at the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the joint secretary of debt management of Japan EAD; the additional secretary to the President; special secretary of the Cabinet; secretary of the Statistics Department; secretary of the Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division, deputy secretary commerce at WTO, economic counsellor to WTO, Geneva.

In WTO, her abilities were recognised when she was made the consensus chairperson of the Working Party on GATS Rules.
