A local court on Thursday sent five police officers on physical remand for allegedly killing a civilian and injuring two others within the limits of the Korangi Industrial Area police.
The accused were produced before the South Judicial Magistrate in the Karachi City Court, where the investigating officer stated that their weapons had been sent for forensic analysis. He added that those responsible would be identified after the post-mortem report of the slain citizen, Ataullah, was finalised.
The court sent the five accused police officials on physical remand for four days.
Ataullah was returning home from work with his brother, nephew and a co-worker on Tuesday night, when they were intercepted by robbers. They called Madadgar 15 for help but on arrival, the police allegedly opened fire at them, killing Ataullah and injuring two of his companions.
Korangi SSP Faisal Abdullah Chachar's PSO initially informed the department that a police team had encountered robbers but Ataullah's brother Sanaullah claimed the police had shot them instead of the robbers, who had already fled before the police arrived.
On Wednesday, a case was lodged under Sections 394 and 302 read with Section 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code - pertaining to intentional murder and voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery - against five police officials who participated in the 'encounter.' The case was registered on Sanaullah's behalf.
