Govt to observe ‘Fix a leak week’

A leaking faucet can waste up to 100 gallons of water a day

LAHORE:

The Punjab government has decided to observe ‘Fix a leak week’ starting from Monday to raise awareness on the efficient and wise use of water. Following the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, Punjab Housing and Urban Development Department is observing the week across the province. While briefing the media about the campaign on Monday, Punjab Minister for Housing and Urban Development Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed pointed out that only 2.5% of the total of water available on the earth’s surface was freshwater and the purpose of observing the week was to raise awareness on water conservation. He pointed out the water wastage due to small leakages translated into a heavy loss of water. “Careless attitude towards urban leaks can waste millions of gallons of water annually, thus depriving millions of people of their basic water needs,” he remarked. “A leaking faucet can waste up to 100 gallons of water a day. A loosely closed tap can waste gallons of water while you brush your teeth.” He highlighted that the authorities concerned had been instructed to raise public awareness as well as fix water leakages in their offices and public places.
