PM blames past deals for expensive power

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday regretted the negative impact of past pacts signed for expensive power and the cumulative circular debt, and said the energy sector in the country was facing a severe crisis.
Chairing a meeting to review the progress on energy sector reforms, the prime minister noted that the common man and industrial sector had been burdened with agreements of the past for costly power generation while on the other hand the circular debt kept on surging due to efforts made for the provision of cheap electricity. “That weight was also impacting the national exchequer,” he added.
During the meeting, the prime minister was given a detailed briefing on the continuity of reforms process in the energy sector and achievement of various targets within the stipulated time period, stated a press release issued by the PM Office media wing.
The prime minister directed that the system for provision of subsidy should be made just, fair and transparent with special focus on ensuring relief to the deserving people.
He gave directives that a strategy and road map should be formulated keeping in view various aspects, including reforms in the energy sector, power requirement and its generation, ratio of increase and decrease during different months, production cost, sales, revenue, different rates of electricity and their impact on different sectors, so that the sector could be steered out of the crisis, besides meeting energy requirement of other sectors.
